Artem R. Oganov was born in 1975 in Moscow, USSR. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1998 and earned his PhD from University College London (UK) in 2002. He remained there as a postdoctoral researcher for one year before joining ETH Zurich as a senior scientist and group leader. From 2008 to 2017, he served as a Professor at Stony Brook University (US). In 2012, he received China's Thousand Talents Award, followed by a Russian Government Megagrant in 2013, through which he initiated laboratory development in both countries. He has been a Professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Russia since 2015 and became one of its first three Distinguished Professors in 2024.

With over 300 scientific publications that have attracted more than 30,000 citations (Web of Science), he was honored with the Chinese Government Friendship Award in 2019 (the highest recognition for foreign experts) and named a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher in 2022 and 2024 (an accolade granted to the top 0.1% of most-cited scientists). Since 2023, he has chaired the Scientific Committee of the VYZOV Prize, a prestigious international research award based in Russia.
