Helge Sören Stein

BIOGRAPHY
Prof. Dr. Helge Stein (born 1988) heads the Professorship of Digital Catalysis at the Technical University of Munich, TUM School of Natural Sciences and the Munich Center for Machine Learning, based at the Garching research campus. He joined TUM in 2023 after holding a Tenure-Track position in Applied Electrochemistry at Karlsruhe Insitute of Technology. Prof. Stein studied physics at Göttingen University (2008–2013) before completing a PhD in mechanical engineering at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2017, focusing on high-throughput methods. He then spent a research period at Caltech in the USA via the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis before returning to Germany. His research group pioneers automated, robotics-based high-throughput experimentation, integrated with machine learning and data science, to discover and upscale novel materials for catalysts and batteries. His group built global, decentralized Material Acceleration Platforms (MAP) spanning discovery to system integration for energy storage and conversion. As an educator, he is passionate about inspiring the next generation of innovators and embedding the “fire of innovation” into teaching alongside his transformative research approach. He is also active in the greater Asian region through TUM.Asia in Singapore and India.
